Omron upgrades its smallest temperature controllers

06/07/2010

Increased indication accuracy and faster sampling rate are among the important enhancements that Omron has incorporated in the latest versions of its compact E5GN temperature controller.

The difference is clear

At the heart of the new E5GN controllers is a large easy-to-read colour-change display, which can be configured to alternate between showing SV/PV and controller status messages, including alarms.

The display can also be switched between 3 colours, allowing it to be used to provide an instant visual indication of an alarm condition.

Multi input types and increased accuracy

The controllers are available with either universal inputs for use with Pt sensors and thermocouples, or with inputs that are compatible with standard analogue current and voltage signals.

The new models have an indication accuracy of ±0.3% when used with thermocouples, and ±0.2% for all other input types.

Screwless clamp terminals are now offered as standard to make wiring faster and easier.

Additional I/O functionality

As well as Relay and Voltage (SSR Driver) output types, the new range of E5GN controllers is available with a linear 0-20 mA/ 4-20 mA output. The current output can be used to control devices such as valves, inverters or thyristors, or can be assigned to transfer data such as process value or set value to PLCs, data loggers or another temperature controller.

Other enhancements include the introduction of heater alarms and event inputs, as well as provision for two independent alarm outputs.

Applications with a logic strategy

Like a PLCs's ladder, the E5GN has 8 logic registers to perform logic switching. These 7 'work bits' can be programmed to perform simple logic operations, with or without time delays, using the status of alarms or the controllers digital inputs. The result can be used to control the operation of the E5GN itself, or one of its Control or Sub outputs.

This allows complete control systems to be implemented without the need for additional devices such as timers, mini-PLCs or intelligent relays. Not only does this provide cost savings, it also makes the systems easier to design, build, set-up and maintain.

Fast and easy integration

With the growing complexity of industrial systems, Omron understands that system integration is becoming even more challenging.

Therefore, with the development of Omron’s advanced software features like Smart Platform and Smart Active Parts, fast and easy integration of Omron temperature controllers within your automation system is now possible.

These advanced software features also allow you to configure your system more efficiently, enabling you to adapt or improve the performance and operation of your machine and drastically reduce programming and development time.

Easy set-up and programming via software

Set up and programming for the advanced features of the new controllers is easily carried out using Omron's CX-Thermo software, a Windows-based package that runs on a PC. This provides full access to all of the controller's functions, and even allows libraries of functions to be built, which can be transferred between controllers as an aid to rapid configuration.

Presented in 1/32 DIN (48 x 24 mm) housings, the new units are the smallest models in the popular E5-N temperature controller range yet they make no compromise on versatility or ease of use.
